GIVING BACK

Armando Badia Senior Center

When we heard about how the senior center was in disrepair and in need of overall care and attention, we knew that we had to help! The Armando Badia Senior Center is an important resource for elderly Cuban-Americans in Miami. We worked with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Baptist Health senior management team in a collaborative effort. Our media IT experts designed an audio/visual system, and we offered and installed surplus Baptist Health audio visual equipment. In addition, we provided a collection of about 100 archived fine art photographs based on a theme of diversity to line the center’s walls.

Children’s Yucatan Peninsula Fund

Baptist Health South Florida physicians and medical specialists travel the world to bring quality medicine and surgical procedures to people who otherwise would not have access to such services. We voluntarily accompanied a group of Baptist Health podiatric physicians and resident students on a trip to rural areas in the Yucatan Peninsula to document their medical services and to support the medical staff with the day to day chores and routines. We did not charge for the travel or for the hours devoted to this project. The photographs that we took were used by the Children’s Yucatan Peninsula Fund to raise additional revenue for the ongoing program.

City of South Miami

Since one of Baptist Health’s premier hospitals, South Miami Hospital, is located in the City of South Miami, we try to do all we can for the community. For several years, we hosted an international art exhibition in the Victor E. Clarke auditorium at South Miami Hospital with proceeds going to City of South Miami. The exhibition included entries from around 33 participating countries. Our Media Services IT staff provided audio/video and graphic arts needs for the exhibition. We continue to provide equipment and staff for the City’s annual live State of the City broadcast for which we do not charge.

Day of Caring

The Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness is a locally-planned, volunteer – based, self-supporting community event designed to educate, empower and give hope to everyone affected by breast cancer. Part of the annual day’s event is an exciting fashion show in which all of the models, both male and female, are breast cancer survivors. Baptist Health’s media services division videotapes the fashion show and takes still photos without compensation. We produce a video for the group to use in its fundraising efforts.

Hands on Miami

Hands on Miami is one of the volunteer organizations that we work with to lend a hand to the community. One project we participated in was sprucing up Bay Point School, an alternative boarding school in Miami for teenage boys with behavior management issues. We painted walls, pulled weeds and planted shrubs. Our Media Services volunteers also recorded the day’s event by taking still pictures, which we donated to them for use in their fundraising endeavors. We donated framed fine art photographic prints for the hallways and classrooms of the school.

Telemedicine

As part of the Baptist Health South Florida Five-Year Information Technology Strategic Plan, the Telemedicine & Media Services division is committed to providing the equipment and content necessary to achieve the highest level of learning possible across the medical community nationally and internationally. Our IT media experts have volunteered countless hours in technology consultation to countries in South America and the Caribbean. We have donated equipment, installation and training for hospitals and physicians in the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Haiti, Turks and Caicos. Our media IT professionals have provided the ability for these countries to:

• Conduct medical consultations
• Participate in educational programs and training sessions
• Watch live surgeries originating from Baptist Health hospitals
• Access resources from Baptist Health libraries and medical services
